Book Giveaway: Water for Elephants

So, I love to read. I love to read so much I sometimes hoard books. This must stop. So, I'm starting to give away some books I've enjoyed a lot. First up, Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants. This is a copy my mom gave me while we were on vacation. I devoured this book and now need to pass it along. However, to be honest about what I'm giving away, I did mention this copy came from my mom. That means her dog, Cady, sort of chewed on it a little. Crazy black labs. The cover is neatly taped on with just a few puncture marks.

To be considered for this still good to read, slightly taped book giveaway... please submit a story about a crazy animal in your life. Maybe it was a raccoon that had you trapped or a cat who climbed ladders. Whatever. Entertain me. Contest will end on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at 12:00 PM. One winner (random) will be awarded with the Cady copy. I will pay shipping worldwide for this dog-eared (sorry.) copy. If you would prefer a copy not already perused by Cady, there's the Amazon link over there so you can buy it new.

Are you all scared because I mentioned the puncture marks? Or have you just all read it already? 'Cause it was a really good book, and the itty-bitty canine marks are only in the cover...

You are too funny! Maybe you and my hubby could get in a book exchange program or something. He's SUCH a book worm - currently reading All the Pretty Horses. We have BOXES and BOXES of books he's read and won't read again. I understand holding onto the classics but come on now...enough!

hmmm.... you used both the words worm and horses..... that's the best entry so far!

I have a dog that chews everything. We got her a month ago and she has proceeded to chew up shoes, our $1000 landscape, and most recently my expensive Cracker Barrel rockers on my front porch. She is driving me insane. So that being said now the front porch has shiny orange sheen... Hot Sauce. Needless to say the chewing has temporarily been taken care of. I would love to read this book because I am a book hoarder too. But if I win this book, when I finish it I will host a give away for it on my blog. I want to win!

I have to tell you about my orange tabby cat named Rusty. He was the only love of my life for many years until I met my husband. I had a parakeet that was safely in his cage hanging from the ceiling, safely out of reach (or so I thought). One day, I heard a commotion coming from my bedroom. I sprinted to the room to find Rusty (who was not declawed) swinging from the parakeet cage. Unfortunately, he did not know how to get down. Actually, he was pretty stuck. I had to lift him up and pry his claws from the cage. Fortunately, my parakeet survived and Rusty never attempted that again. He was quite the impulsive kitty.

Well, I would enter except that every time I start typing, our new dog, Katie the Beagle, keeps jumping up on my lap and demanding that I rub her belly.

Really, I would just like to submit a one-word entry on the topic of crazy pets: Simeon.

(I mean, I *could* go on and remind you of the time my blind dog -- for those who didn't know Simeon, he was a black German Shepherd/Husky mix who went blind early in life and simply refused to believe that he couldn't see -- persuaded the neighbor's dog to dig him out of our yard, or the many times he ate through the one-inch boards of the fence, or talk about the time he exited the house through one screen window and came back through a different screen window, thus inflicting two broken screens for one expedition.

Or I could tell you tales of his herding prowess that you may never have heard, like the time on a camping trip that blind old Simeon decided to herd an entire flock of geese across Lake Don Pedro in California and actually swam them all into a neat circle in a bay, or the time he stampeded an entire herd of cows *up* a mountain in the Sierra and got himself stuck on top of a rock a couple thousand feet up from our campsite.

Or maybe I could talk about how brave he was about coyotes when he was safe inside a house, but what a flat-out chicken he was when we were camping in the Grand Canyon and the coyotes were just outside the tent.

But that would be superfluous, so I'll just stick with the one-word crazy pet entry: Simeon.)
